Cheryl and Greg Kerr.
CHERYL Kerr is a darling.
And that is precisely how she greets her friends at Wollongong Continental Pool, and later Levendi café after her lap session.
“Hello, darling!”
Cheryl is five-foot-nothing and bounces around the Wollongong waterfront in teeny-tiny shorts rain or shine.
The tanned and toned swimmer is pushing 60, but reminds me of a little girl – smiling and chatting with energy electric.
Cheryl swims in the Conti every day, and last year set an intention not to miss one day in the water.
Even when she went on holiday away from Wollongong she made sure she swam in the sea or a pool where ever she was.
Cheryl is married to one of the Continental open water Sharkbaiter swimmers, Greg Kerr, who is also an icon of the beachfront.
He rides an unusual-looking red bicycle, called a Strider, that folds up small enough to carry on train rides to Sydney and flights abroad.
He bought it while working in Dubai.
“What I like about it is it folds up and I can take it into my apartment where I was living in Dubai,” says Greg.
“It’s a clever design, designed by a student as part of his Masters thesis at Imperial College London. I like quirky things. I bought a couple of them.”
As Greg talks about his bicycle, Cheryl pipes in saying she hopes he is saying something nice about her.
Cheryl used to work in Greg’s uncle’s fish ‘n’ chips shop, which is where they fell in love.
Greg walked in looking for his uncle and chatted Cheryl up.
The sea-swimmers married and had two girls, Elizabeth and Stephanie, aged 30.
It baffles me how Cheryl managed to carry and then birth TWINS in that tiny frame.
“And it was a natural birth too, darling,” she says proudly.
